Kick Start Cadetships
One of ABB’s ongoing recruitment initiatives is our Cadetship Program. We recognise that the students of today will be the employees to grow our company into a world-class agribusiness tomorrow, so we seek undergraduates who will use their talents, develop their skills and contribute constructively to the organisation. Through the introduction of cadets, the company will be in a better position to meet its future challenges; importantly attracting and retaining the best talent.
ABB provides valuable work experience to cadets potentially across a diverse range of work functions.
Benefits:
- Kick start a career whilst still studying
- Gain real-world work experience
- Put into practice what you have learnt through your studies
- Opportunity to work with our best people
- Monetary contribution to study expenses (e.g. HECS debt, professional development programs)
What does the Cadetship involve?
Open to students currently enrolled in tertiary study with at least 12 months remaining before graduation
Successful cadets are considered permanent part-time employees and receive a wage to reflect this. Cadets are therefore entitled to pro rata annual leave and pro rata sick leave
Cadets are guaranteed harvest work during the post-exam period (usually late October to January), and whilst studying they are required to work part-time until completion of their degree. One harvest is to be spent at a grain receival site
As a cadet you receive continual development through on-the-job and targeted training
On graduating, cadets may be offered a 2 year fixed term contract of employment, in a suitable position
At the end of the first year of the fixed term contract, TAFE cadets receive $1500 dollars towards their study expenses (e.g. accumulated HECS debt)
At the end of the first year of the fixed term contract, University cadets receive $1500 dollars towards their study expenses (e.g. accumulated HECS debt), and another $1500 at the end of the second year of the fixed term contract – that’s $3000 in total

Here’s what our recent cadets had to say:
Brad Gosling
“As a cadet starting in 2003, I gained valuable work experience relevant to my study, which put me ahead of other undergraduates who relied on only theory to help them obtain a job in their chosen field. I have learnt far more about not only the grains industry but also business in general, that I couldn’t have learnt at uni, and I attribute that as the reason why I moved from our Adelaide head office to take up the position of Assistant Wheat Trader in Melbourne in September 2005. The cadetship was my foot in the door to a career in the grains industry.”
Stuart Pinkney
“The cadetship program related to my study in business, economics and science, and the grain industry seemed interesting, tangible and a place where I could make a difference. I had so much to gain by applying for the cadetship in 2001, and have seen many aspects of how the company operates - from sampling grain at the Roseworthy site during the 2001/2002 harvest to my current position as a Business Analyst in the Supply Chain Strategy department.”
Carly McDonald
“I have been with the company since starting as a cadet in 2003. I have been given the chance to be flexible in the work I undertake and therefore grown so much in my time here. I feel that I am considered a valuable employee and given more opportunity to receive mentoring and movement throughout the company.”
Patrick White
“Coming from a farming background, I have an interest in the grains industry, and in 2002 the cadetship program provided me with the perfect opportunity to begin a career whilst I am still studying. I am lucky to have the opportunity to network and obtain valuable industry contacts at this stage in my life.”
